This or That? Getting to Know Your Faculty

The library is open—in this webinar, we’ll learn to better read our faculty using data from the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE). We’ll share results from some of FSSE research’s greatest hits discussing what we’ve found when asking questions such as ‘teachers or researchers?’ ‘STEM or non-STEM?’ ‘general education or non-general education?’ and ‘equitable or inequitable?’ We’ll also provide tips for people interested in their own FSSE analyses responding to questions such as ‘disaggregate or aggregate?’ ‘scales or items?’ and ‘modules or core?’ Join us in discussing these questions and more as we better get to know our faculty with FSSE.

Report Builder Webinar

Overview of BCSSE 2019 Updates

Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE) web survey now includes questions specifically for incoming transfer and delayed-entry students, as well as traditional first-year students. Participants will learn about the changes to the survey, newly revised reports and data use, and details regarding fall and winter administrations. This is webinar is primarily intended for past BCSSE users. There will be an additional webinar in March 2019 intended for anyone interested in learning more about BCSSE.

Taking Action: Using NSSE for Institutional Improvement

More than 1,600 institutions have used NSSE to collect important information about the quality of the undergraduate experience. NSSE provides actionable data through refined measures, easy to use reports, and online reporting. But NSSE was never just about data-gathering—it was created to stimulate improvement. Yet institutional action in response to NSSE results remains an ongoing challenge. This session highlights the most recent report of field-tested lessons from about two dozen institutions that have taken advantage of updated NSSE results to catalyze change on campus to address the question: What facilitates institutional action?

Recommendations for Using Multiple Years of NSSE Data

Nine out of ten institutions administer NSSE on a regular cycle such as every one, two, or three years. The 2018 administration marks the sixth year of the updated version of NSSE, which means that almost all institutions have multiple years of results from the updated NSSE. Of course, institutions eagerly use their multi-year data to enrich analyses and to answer additional questions about the quality of their student learning experiences. The purpose of this webinar is to discuss some of the best approaches to examining changes and trends in engagement patterns, and evaluating specific campus initiatives.

Tableau, Psychometrics, and Content Summaries, Oh My! FSSE Tools and Resources

FSSE recently released a variety of new resources for using FSSE data and learning more about how faculty contribute to the undergraduate experience. This webinar will give an overview of these resources, and provide examples on how these tools can be used to learn more about faculty who teach undergraduates. Included in the new resources are a new interactive data visualization tool using Tableau, studies of FSSE’s validity and reliability, and documents designed to give an informational overview of the content areas covered on FSSE.

Student comments can provide rich insight and add texture to statistical trends highlighted in Institutional Reports, but can be overlooked as it is difficult to efficiently analyze textual data. Examining Engagement for Small Populations

Quantitative and survey research depends heavily on large sample sizes, but there are a variety of reasons why larger sample sizes may not be possible. In this webinar, FSSE and NSSE staff will discuss common challenges associated with assessing the experiences of small populations and explore possible solutions for those working toward improving the experiences of small populations. Using FSSE Demographic Data to Look Within Your Institution

Institutions are often searching for ways to better target faculty development and improve insight into faculty practices. In this webinar, FSSE staff will discuss how to use your demographic data to explore how faculty characteristics influence things like effective teaching practices, engagement in high-impact practices, and time spent in and out of the classroom. Moving Beyond Statistical Significance: Using Effect Sizes in NSSE

What constitutes a meaningful difference in your NSSE results? With large samples it is common for very small differences to be statistically significant. That's why effect sizes, which provide a measure of "practical" significance, are so important. Based on a recent analysis of statistical comparisons of Engagement Indicators and High-Impact Practices, we have derived new recommendations for interpreting small, medium, and large effect sizes. In this webinar, we will explain our recommendations and invite participants to consider their use with their NSSE results.

Using BCSSE and NSSE to Help Retention Efforts

Retaining students is a key initiative for institutions. This webinar will highlight how to incorporate BCSSE and NSSE data to help inform your institution’s retention efforts. In this webinar we will discuss research findings relating engagement and retention as well as explore ways in which NSSE and BCSSE data can be used to supplement retention efforts on your campus. We will also highlight examples of how other institutions have used their NSSE and BCSSE data in their retention plans. Finally, we will encourage participants to think of their own retention efforts and how they might use their NSSE or BCSSE to help improve their efforts.

Attendees should make sure they have copies of both the BCSSE and NSSE surveys as this session will identify specific items from each. Copies of the surveys can be found at nsse.iub.edu. The NSSE update: Analysis and design of ten new Engagement Indicators

With the update to the NSSE instrument, ten new Engagement Indicators were rigorously tested to replace the original Benchmarks of Effective Educational Practice. NSSE research analysts have conducted several tests to evaluate the quality of the indicators, including descriptive analysis and studies of validity, reliability, and survey construction. This session will provide useful information for both NSSE 2013 and 2014 participants regarding the development of the indicators, and insights from the analyses. Using NSSE data for accreditation

The most commonly reported use of NSSE results is for accreditation. NSSE's Accreditation Toolkits, designed for all regional and several specialized associations, map NSSE processes and items to the requirements and standards for each accreditor. The toolkits are available on the NSSE website. This webinar shows how NSSE items map to accreditation standards and discusses the potential for using NSSE data in institutional self-studies and quality improvement plans. The updated survey provides new items, topical modules, and more actionable Engagement Indicators, relevant to accreditation. If your self-study and site visit is fast approaching, or 5 or more years out, this session will be useful for your accreditation team.

An overview of BCSSE 2013

In this webinar, we describe the revisions that have been made and provide an overview of what users can expect from BCSSE in 2013. BCSSE collects data about entering college students' high school academic and co-curricular experiences, as well as their expectations for participating in educationally purposeful activities during the first college year. BCSSE is designed to be paired with a NSSE administration at the end of the first college year, providing an in-depth understanding of first-year student engagement on your campus.

NSSE 2013: Discussion of the new survey and reports

The year 2013 marks an important milestone for the National Survey of Student Engagement, with the first substantial update to the survey since its inaugural administration in 2000. In this discussion session, participants learned about survey updates, including changes to survey items and benchmarks along with issues related to transitioning to the new survey (e.g., longitudinal comparisons), and, most important, were invited to give feedback on new reports and resources.

Maximizing NSSE in the VSA: Approaches to transparency, accountability, and improvement

The first VSA-hosted webinar of 2012, Maximizing NSSE in the VSA: Approaches to Transparency, Accountability and Improvement , with Dr. Jillian Kinzie, Associate Director, IU Center for Postsecondary Research, took place on February 8th. Approximately 300 institutions feature NSSE results in the Student Experiences and Perceptions section of the VSA College Portrait. Some institutions have maximized this display by presenting additional results, including information about goals, institutional action on results, and improvement initiatives. This webinar shares strategies for presenting NSSE results and approaches to engaging different audiences in the data including prospective students, the public, policymakers and the campus community. Ideas about efforts to capitalize on NSSE results to assess and improve quality in the undergraduate experience and student success are also exchanged.

Using NSSE data in accreditation

The most commonly reported use of NSSE results is assessment for accreditation. NSSE's Accreditation Toolkits, designed for all regional and several specialized associations, articulate the requirements and standards for each accreditor with NSSE process and items. In this session we show how NSSE items map to accreditation standards, discuss the potential for using NSSE data in institutional self-studies and quality improvement plans, and explore ways colleges and universities have used their results in accreditation and to measure and monitor institutional effectiveness.

The NSSE Pocket Guide, Student Experience in Brief, and other resources for parents, students, and admissions staff

Engagement experiences of student-veterans

Colleges and universities are experiencing dramatic increases in the enrollment of veterans due to the return of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. Although many veterans choose to attend community colleges or career and technical programs, large numbers enroll at baccalaureate-granting institutions. Yet little is known about their learning experiences or how they view the campus climate. In 2010, approximately 11,000 self-identified student-veterans responded to the NSSE survey regarding their engagement experiences. This webinar presents the results of this survey and delves into the details of the student-veteran experience on our campuses. It also provides opportunities for participants to pose questions, provide feedback, or make observations as we discuss the results.

NSSE's Psychometric Portfolio: Evidence for reliability, validity, and other quality indicators

Educational and institutional research that relies on survey methodology is often criticized for a lack of psychometric evidence to support use of the instrument. NSSE research analysts have developed a new framework for collecting and presenting evidence for reliability, validity, and reduction of bias.
