The NSSE 2020 administration is just around the corner, and we could not be more pleased to enter our third decade of providing actionable data and reports to inform improvement efforts at campuses throughout the country. Last fall, campus contacts from the 619 colleges and universities participating in NSSE 2020 selected from among a variety of customization options designed to tailor both student recruitment efforts and survey content. Campuses customize recruitment message content, including signatories and subject lines, and have the option to post survey links for students in their portal/learning management system. Survey content is customizable by adding additional questions from among NSSE's nine Topical Modules or by participating in a consortium, as well as choosing from among four different prompts for the open-ended question that appears on the final page of the survey.
To put customization into context, some fun NSSE 2020 facts:
187 institutions are participating in consortia;
175 institutions are placing survey links in student portals/LMS;
541 institutions appended at least one Topical Module to the core survey;
2 consortia are new: the Honors Consortium launched in 2019 and the Consortium of Online Learning is in its inaugural year;
All but 24 institutions customized student recruitment messages
NSSE 2020 closes on May 15, when NSSE analysts will go to work crunching numbers and wrangling Excel macros. In the interim, approximately two million students will be invited to reflect on how they spend time both in and out of the classroom by submitting responses to the survey. Of course, the real work begins when NSSE data and reports deliver to participating institutions. Check out NSSE's Lessons from the Field for examples of how institutions make meaning of NSSE data.
