Displayed below are the ten categories of related majors NSSE uses by default for the Major Field Report, Report Builder, and other purposes. However, participating institutions have the option to customize their major field categories for the Major Field Report.

In NSSE data, a student's self-reported first and second (if applicable) majors are entered as the string variables "MAJfirst" and “MAJsecond” which are then assigned one of the 139 codes below as the variables "MAJfirstcode" and “MAJsecondcode.” In addition, 124 of these majors are grouped into the ten default categories below as the variables "MAJfirstcol" and “MAJsecondcol.” Both first and second majors are used for the Major Field Report.
