"Acting on Data: Lessons about the Use of Student Engagement Results to Improve Student Learning"
The ultimate goal of assessment projects, including the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), is not to gather data, but to catalyze improvement. This session presents lessons about acting on data from institutional stories of NSSE use, including approaches to sharing results, triangulating data, and involving students in interpreting evidence. The content for this session draws from more than 50 accounts of NSSE data use from campuses that have effectively used results to facilitate conversations and take action to improve undergraduate education. Instructive, field-tested lessons are important for illustrating foundational principles of assessment and furthering best practice. Attendees will gain a handful of field-tested lessons about what works, reflect on their own data use and consider what stimulates and impedes action, and be encouraged to adopt a new strategy to take action on assessment results.
