During the 2023 administration, NSSE will offer early access to survey data for the second consecutive year. The raw data will help institutions get a jump on assessment, planning, and internal reporting during the spring and summer months.
The raw data files – available in early May 2023 – will be dynamically downloaded from our online survey facility in a simple CSV format, and will include all core survey item responses, population file information, and other helpful fields. Topical modules, consortium items, and all open-text comments and write-in responses will also be included. Recoded and derived variables, such as the Engagement Indicators, are not included. We will refresh the raw data three times per day during the survey administration.

Normally, data are delivered to participating institutions in the summer, with a preliminary version uploaded to the Institutional Interface in late-July and final version uploaded with the Institutional Reports (Snapshot, Engagement Indicators, High-Impact Practices, etc.) in August. However, with the Early Raw Data Download feature, institutions receive live access to limited versions of their current-administration data.
This feature proved to be popular in 2022. When asked how they liked the new feature, participants at the 2022 AIR conference were thrilled. One user commented that it gave them a chance to study their results quickly and before the additional distraction of having all the comparison results with the full reports.
If you have questions about the Early Raw Data Download or feedback that will be helpful as we further develop this feature, contact your Project Services Team or email NSSE at nsse@indiana.edu.
