NSSE’s Major Field Report (MFR) is being redesigned as an interactive data visualization in Tableau. The new online report will display results for Engagement Indicators, High-Impact Practices (HIPs), and individual items in up to ten customizable categories of related majors. As in the past, dashboards will include within-institution displays for side-by-side customizable lists of related majors and between-institution results for your students and those in a customizable group of comparison institutions.
The interactive MFR display will make it possible to repeatedly refine your related-major categories and to filter by student characteristics such as gender identity, race/ethnicity, and first-generation status. Institution-level filters for the between-institution dashboard will be based on institutional characteristics such as by control, Carnegie classification, region, and size. To preserve the confidentiality of institutional results as specified in the NSSE Participation Agreement, it will not be possible to select or exclude individual institutions. Stay tuned for an email announcement later this year when these results are available!
Also under development, a special within-institution report for institutions that participated in the Inclusiveness and Engagement in Cultural Diversity (ICD) Topical Module is coming soon. The true value of this module comes in the ability to disaggregate results by student demographics such as race/ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and other categories. An interactive data display in Tableau will make such exploration possible. Look for this release soon after the new year.
NSSE researchers are designing publicly accessible Summary Table results of Engagement Indicators, HIPs, and other items for anyone interested to produce customized results by student and institution characteristics. In this format, no institution will be publicly identifiable, but researchers can use the results for benchmarking against local results. Summary tables will be released after the new year.
