Engagement Insights: Survey Findings on the Quality of Undergraduate Education

Welcome to the 2019 edition of Engagement Insights, NSSE’s annual dissemination of selected research findings and institutional stories that have broad relevance to the improvement of undergraduate education.

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) documents dimensions of quality inundergraduate education and provides information and assistance to colleges, universities, and other organizations to improve student learning. Its primary activity is annually surveying college students to assess the extent to which they engage in educational practices associated with high levels of learning and development.

Engagement Indicators and High-Impact Practices

To represent the multiple dimensions of student engagement, NSSE reports scores for 10 Engagement Indicators calculated from 47 questions and grouped within four themes. Additionally, NSSE provides results on six High-Impact Practices, aptly named for their positive associations with student learning and retention.
